A RESEARCH STUDY ON FLOOD MODELLING FOR SEGAMAT RIVER KAJIAN PENYELIDIKAN PERMODELAN BANJIR UNTUK SUNGAI SEGAMAT FINAL REPORT Report No.: NAHRIM.PKS.5/2012

Title : Flood Modelling For Segamat River Final Report, NAHRIM, 2012
Sypnosis : Floods occurred in the past at Segamat, Johor during the 1950s and 1984. In December 2006, flood hit Segamat and most of the area in Kota Tinggi and Johor Bahru. The second wave came more seriously in less than a month in January 2007, where most areas were being flooded. Many residents were still badly traumatised by the 2006 flood. It left the town full of muddy sludge and dirty rubbish. It was reported by the Department of Irrigation and Drainage Malaysia, the recent flood in January 2011 was more than 271 years ARI recorded at Kemelah Station (Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) Malaysia, 2011a). Most areas in Segamat were reported with no electricity and water supply (Segamat.com, 2011). Around 31,000 of people evacuated and caused several deaths (The Sun Malaysia, 2011). Major roads for example Mile 8 of Jalan Muar-Segamat, Sungai Penarah bridge at KM63 of Jalan Muar-Segamat, KM196 of Jalan Johor Bahru-Seremban and the road to Felda Redon were closed (The Straits Times, 2011). Some roads were also damaged while the railway track at Segamat were partly flushed by the flood water and caused the train services to stop operation for few days. Thus, a flood modelling for Segamat River is needed to be set up to study further on the factors leading to the January 2011 flood.
